Grass sawfly
We have not observed any grass sawfly larvae in our field surveys. This suggests that the larvae have matured and have dropped to the soil. They will form pupae in the soil in which they will remain until the following spring. We will monitor these areas for adult emergence next spring.

Now that the adult sawflies have finished their emergence cycle, we will soon start our state-wide sawfly infestation survey. This is a large project that we strive to make as comprehensive as possible.

This is the first episode of a new behind-the-scenes series on our farm.

Today I’m checking behind the planter looking at planting depth, seed-to-soil contact, and making sure we’re placing seed into moisture, even in a dry spring.

Everything can look good from the cab, but this is where you find out what’s really happening.

We also ran into a prescription issue that slowed us down, which is a good reminder that even when conditions are ideal, the little things still matter.
