Calgary, AB — The Western Canadian Wheat Growers supports the Prime Minister’s consideration to send a high-level delegation to China to bring certainty to Canadian canola exports. “On March 25, the Wheat Growers called for the Ministers of Agriculture and Agri-Food, International Trade Diversification and Foreign Affairs to make this issue their top priority. We’re pleased that the Prime Minister agrees with us,” stated Daryl Fransoo, Director.
There is a great deal of uncertainty in the agriculture community. Farmers are reaching out worried about which markets are open and which will be closed. Farmers will be planting their crops in a matter of weeks and the current situation sows uncertainty.
China is not the only market with Canadian trade disputes. Italy is restricting our durum wheat, India our pulses, as well as non-tariff trade disputes with Peru, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia.
“If the Prime Minister wants to support the Canadian agriculture economy, we should have this agriculture delegation starting immediately and not stopping until we have met with the appropriate officials in China, India, Italy, Peru and Vietnam. The Wheat Growers Directors are prepared to immediately participate, but if we wait much longer we’ll all be planting. The time to act is now,” closed Jim Wickett, Chair.
