How to identify Foxtail Barley (Hordeum jubatum) This plant here is foxtail barley, a member of the grass family Poaceae. It is a native grass to North America which has become a weed in many countries around the world. It is a perennial which sets its seed in the summer. The plants grow in a clumping, bunchgrass habit, and doesn’t grow very tall, being at most about two feet in height. The stems are smooth and light green in color. The leaves are flat and rolled in the bud, and may be smooth or hairy. They have short, membranous or hairy ligules, and no auricles. The sheaths are split and hairy. The leaves usually have a grayish or bluish hue and raised veins on their upper surface.
