Donald Slayton was one of the original astronauts chosen to fly for Project Mercury, America’s first human spaceflight program, which ran from 1958 to 1963.
Before venturing off to the stars, Slayton grew up on a farm near Leon, Wis., where he helped raise sheep and cows, and grew tobacco.
