On Jan. 8, 1957, Governor General Vincent Massey delivered his throne speech to open the fifth session of Canada’s 22nd Parliament. Louis Saint Laurent served as prime minister.
The governor general told politicians that a piece of farmland legislation would take shape soon.
“It is proposed to recommend in the Senate the establishment of a committee to consider what should be done to make better use of land for agriculture and thus to contribute more effectively to the improvement of agricultural production and the incomes of those engaged in it,” he said.
