Company shifts focus as demand falls for loader backhoes

CNH has officially finalized its decision to phase out production at its Burlington, Iowa, assembly plant by the second quarter of 2026. The company cited declining demand and underutilization as the main factors behind this move, which will affect around 200 employees.

The decision was first discussed in November 2024 and confirmed following the completion of the decisional bargaining process with the United Auto Workers (UAW). CNH reported a 47% drop in loader backhoe demand since 2014, one of Burlington’s primary products. Meanwhile, demand for skid steers and compact track loaders produced at other CNH facilities has risen by nearly 70%, making Burlington one of the least utilized and most expensive plants to maintain.

To ease the transition, CNH announced an operational pause for the rest of the week following the announcement, during which employees will be paid. The company is negotiating separation packages with the UAW that will include severance pay, continued health insurance, job training, and job placement assistance.

Despite the closure, CNH will continue to maintain a presence in Burlington, focusing on engineering and testing activities. These changes align with the company’s commitment to invest nearly $5 billion over the next five years into U.S. manufacturing and R&D facilities, supporting more than 8,000 employees nationwide.

A CNH spokesperson emphasized that the company remains “dedicated to supporting its workforce while aligning operations with market realities.”

Lyrics:

My days begin with workin’, Alarm’s at 5 o’clock,
I Fill 5 gallon buckets, The feeders and the troughs,
This five to nine ain’t workin’, why the heck do I work so hard?,
I can’t worry ‘bout health problems, I can sleep in when I’m gone,

One, here comes the two to the three to the four,
Tell em’ ‘buy another cow, we need plenty more’,
Blue jeans are gettin’ dirty, what else could I ask for,
Oh my, more chores

Someone pour me up another shot of sweet tea,
They know me and working hard’s got a history,
There’s another flock of sheep that still needs feed,
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,

Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,

I’ve been working pretty stressed but,
I ain’t changing for some cash,
Lord knows that I’m very blessed (More chores),
But I gotta say it’s hard,
Workin’ outside gettin’ charred,
Living out here on the farm, (more chores)

One, here comes the two to the three to the four,
Tell em’ ‘buy another cow, we need plenty more’,
Blue jeans are gettin’ dirty, what else could I ask for,
Oh my, more chores

Someone pour me up another shot of sweet tea,
They know me and working hard’s got a history
There’s another 20 chickens that still need feed,
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,

Everybody on the farm getting’ busy,
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,

Fun, here on ranch that’s what you can’t ignore,
Might be pretty hard but I love it to its core,
Flannel’s gettin’ dirty, what else could I ask for,
Oh my, more chores (Tell ‘em sing with me)

Someone pour me up another shot of sweet tea,
They know me and working hard’s got a history,
There’s another flock of sheep that still needs feed,
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,
Someone pour me up another shot of sweet tea,
They know me and working hard’s got a history,
Watching cattle in the dark, don’t miss me,
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,
(Yeeeeeehaw)
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,
Everybody on the farm gettin’ busy,
It’s the best bro, go get yourself a farm
