State and local partnership preserves working farms and ranches for future generations
Florida continues to strengthen its commitment to agriculture and land conservation through a new partnership that will permanently protect nearly 1,000 acres of working farmland in Polk County.
The preservation effort was completed through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Rural and Family Lands Protection Program in cooperation with Polk County. The initiative protects valuable agricultural properties from future development while allowing farming and ranching activities to continue.
Agricultural conservation easements are an important tool for preserving productive farmland. These agreements prevent urban development on the land while ensuring that farmers and ranchers can continue their operations. The approach supports local food production, strengthens rural economies, and helps protect natural resources.
One of the preserved properties is a large ranch covering approximately 916 acres. The land includes a mix of productive agricultural areas and natural habitats. Nearly half of the property contains native Florida ecosystems, including pine forests, creeks, and waterways that contribute to regional water resources. The remaining acreage supports agricultural production and is being prepared for crops such as strawberries and watermelon.
“I want to recognize the team from the Rural and Family Lands Protection Program for their partnership to protect water, wildlife, wilderness and working landscapes in Polk County,” said Tabitha Biehl, director of Polk County Parks and Natural Resources. “I also want to thank the landowners who have the vision and passion to protect agricultural lands and green spaces in Florida.”
A second preserved property covers about 75 acres and is primarily used as cattle pasture. The land also contains important wetland connections that support local wildlife and environmental health. Protecting these areas helps maintain natural ecosystems while preserving agricultural productivity.
The partnership highlights the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship. By preserving working agricultural lands, communities can maintain their farming heritage while safeguarding open spaces and natural resources for future generations.
