Simple tips on housing diet health and daily care for guinea pigs
Kids begging you for a pet guinea pig on the Farm? Here’s what you should know.
Guinea pigs, also called cavies, are small social animals from South America. They are gentle, easy to handle, and enjoy human interaction. These pets live in groups, so they need companionship and should not be kept isolated from family activity.
Proper housing is very important for their comfort. Each guinea pig needs enough space, at least two square feet per animal. Avoid cages with wire flooring as they can injure their feet. Glass tanks are also not suitable because they trap heat and reduce air flow. Guinea pigs prefer cool temperatures and must be protected from heat, as they can suffer heat stroke easily.
Bedding plays a key role in hygiene and comfort. Safe options include paper-based bedding and aspen shavings. Avoid cedar and pine as they can harm respiratory health. Bedding should be cleaned regularly to control the odor and keep the cage dry. Timothy Hay can also be used as a soft top layer for comfort.
Guinea pigs need simple cage supplies such as a water bottle, a stable food dish, and a hay rack. Clean water should always be available and changed daily. Toys-like tubes and safe objects can provide exercise and reduce boredom.
A healthy diet is based mainly on grass hay like timothy hay. Fresh vegetables and fruits provide important Vitamin C, which guinea pigs cannot produce on their own. Pellets can be given in small amounts but should not be the only food source. Foods high in Vitamin C such as greens and bell peppers are very helpful.
Monitoring health is essential. Signs like loss of appetite or low energy may indicate illness. Common issues include respiratory infections, diarrhea, and dental problems. Heat stress is also a serious risk in warm conditions. Regular cleanliness, proper diet, and early veterinary care help prevent many health problems.
