Milverton barn full of chickens destroyed in fire

Four fire departments helped put out the blaze

The aftermath of a barn fire in Perth County killing all of the around 13,000 breeder hens inside, is an estimated $1 million.

Tuesday morning around 6:30, firefighters from Milverton, Sebringville, Listowel, and Shakespeare responded to the call on Perth Road 124, north of Milverton.

It took about 30 firefighters and an excavator most of Tuesday afternoon to clear the debris.

A cause for the blaze hasn’t been determined yet. The same barn suffered fire damage in 2005 and no cause was ever given.

Perth East and West fire chief Bill Hunter said it’s been almost 20 years since the farm building code has seen any changes, but it might be time to look at some.

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal was notified, but further investigation is being left to the firefighters and there have been no reported injuries.

June 1 USDA Hogs and pigs report was slightly bearish while the U.S. $ Index traded to new contract lows as the de-dollarization that began in 2014 continues.

Feed in the form of soybean meal futures for livestock producers got cheaper, trading to new contract lows.

The Stats Canada seeded acreage update was bullish canola and wheat.
