Presidential Task Force releases recommendations to combat illegal fishing

Encouraging public to suggest implementation methods within 30 days

The Presidential Task Force focusing on combatting Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing and seafood fraud developed a list of ideas to help rectify the issue that contributes to losses between $10 and $23 billion annually.

The list of measures include supporting increasing port inspection standards to stop IUU seafood from reaching consumers, strengthening enforcement, and pursuing international commitments to fighting IUU.

"The Presidential Task Force recommendations on IUU fishing and seafood fraud reflect the gravity of the situation and the need for strong measures to bring an end to pirate fishing and this black market enterprise.  The actions described are a great first step and implementation will be a win-win for ocean conservation and the seafood industry," said Dawn M. Martin, President of SeaWeb.

IUU fishing is seen as a leading factor in global threats to sustaining marine fisheries around the world. Its impacts everything from the economy and ocean health to employment.

"Each of the stakeholder groups highlighted in the recommendations—producers, importers, dealers, retailers, processors and nongovernmental organizations—will be together at the SeaWeb Seafood Summit,” Martin said. The program includes numerous panels on traceability, IUU, human rights, and other aspects addressed by the Task Force. The solution-oriented dialogues that will take place will be among the most effective tools for combating illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing.”

The summit is scheduled for February 9-11, 2015 in New Orleans.
