CFIA urges Canadians to act on plant health awareness

Healthy plants are vital to the survival and well-being of people, animals, and nature. They clean the air, support biodiversity, and are the foundation of food and economic systems. On May 12, Canadians celebrate International Day of Plant Health. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) highlights the 2025 theme, “The importance of plant health in One Health,” to remind us how plants, animals, and humans are all connected.

Plant pests such as invasive insects, diseases, snails, and weeds threaten this balance. These pests damage crops, forests, and gardens, and can disrupt food production and environmental stability. They often spread through human activity, cargo transport, and severe weather. Something as simple as moving firewood from one region to another can carry pests to new places.

To help protect Canada’s plants, CFIA works with governments, industries, and communities to inspect, monitor, and reduce pest threats. They use risk assessments and regular surveys to prevent the spread of invasive species.

Everyone has a role in protecting plant health. Here are some ways you can help:

  • Learn about local invasive species and how to spot them.

  • Avoid bringing plants or seeds into Canada without declaring them.

  • Never move firewood—buy and burn it locally.

  • Clean equipment like RVs, ATVs, or lawn gear before moving them.

  • Report suspicious pests online or to CFIA.

"Healthy plants power Canada’s environment and fuel our economy. The CFIA takes pride in its work to help protect plants from invasive species and pests through rigorous inspections and regulations. On International Day of Plant Health, and every day, please join us by taking action to prevent their spread. Together we can safeguard Canada's natural resources and the human and animal lives that depend on them," said Paul MacKinnon, President, Canadian Food Inspection Agency,

By working together, we can safeguard plants, animals, and our shared future.
