Top five skills I learned through 4-H

Patience

Patience

As I mentioned, we had beef as our project in 4-H. So, we had to train our cattle to do a few things in order to show them at the end of the year. They had to be calm enough to be near people, be able to be led on a halter, stand in a chute to be groomed and be used to people touching them.

Now, I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to halter break a 600-pound animal before, but it takes time. The animal needs to get used to you and must eventually trust you. You’re likely spending many hours – a lot of them in the cold Canadian winter – with your animals.

Once you’ve halter-broke cattle, you acquire patience that can help in so many aspects of life.
