27th World Pork Expo a success

The National Pork Producers Council’s 27th World Pork Expo, held last week at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, was a tremendous success, with large crowds, informative seminars and speakers, and lots of pork.

An estimated 20,000-plus hog farmers, pork industry officials, allied industry representatives, visitors from more than 40 countries and others attended the two-and-a-half-day event, the world’s largest pork-specific tradeshow and exhibition.

More than 400 companies were on hand, showcasing the latest technologies and products for the pork industry.

NPPC Strategic Investment Program members at Wednesday’s SIP luncheon heard from Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds and U.S. Trade Representative Chief Agricultural Negotiator Darci Vetter, all of whom stressed the importance of trade and the need for Congress to approve Trade Promotion Authority legislation, which will help finalize the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Thursday’s lunch featured a panel discussion on federal efforts to combat antibiotic resistance and the measures the U.S. pork industry has taken over the past 10 years to ensure the responsible use of antibiotics in pork production.

Video: Sorting Ewes & Rams | Breeding Time On The Farm!

In this episode, we’re sorting ewes into their breeding groups and introducing them to unrelated rams. Moving rams between barns always comes with challenges, but once the boys meet their ewes, everyone was eager to settle in!

We also welcome back a returning customer who purchased a Suffolk ram from us last year. This season, she chose a Dorset cross ram, now named Benny, to strengthen her flock’s genetics. It’s always rewarding to see repeat customers who value the quality of our breeding stock.

Arnie then tours the crop fields as harvest season approaches. Despite drought conditions this summer, the crops are looking surprisingly good. We close the day with evening feedings and one last look at the rams with their new breeding groups.
