“5-County Beef Tour to be Held – Thursday, June 11th”

The popular Annual Five-County BEEF Tour will be held this year on Thursday, June 11th and will be hosted by Franklin County. The five counties on the tour include Franklin, Vance, Granville, Warren and Wake; however, interested producers from throughout the region are invited to attend and participate in this educational, very informative tour.

Registration will take place starting at 7:30 a.m. at the Franklin County Cooperative Extension Center which is located at the intersection of 401 (Bickett Blvd.) & Hwy 56 East in Louisburg. The first stop on the tour will be Rolling M Acres Farm, owned by Mike Makar and Family in the Pilot community.   This farm is a commercial Angus farm with a research-based face fly study discussed. Pasture management using poultry litter will also be presented.

The second stop will be at Ray Family Farm, owned by Chad Ray and Family. At this stop, we will learn about direct marketing grassfed Belted Galloway beef as well as using current technologies such as blogging, Facebook, website designing, etc. A discussion on various types of summer forages will be demonstrated.

The third stop will be at Springfield Angus, owned by Dr. Phil Goodson. This farm is known nationally for producing top quality Angus cattle.   We will learn about his breeding and nutritional program on raising top genetics Angus. A representative from NRCS will briefly discuss the new grazing program, Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) and how it relates to livestock producers.

Bryan Blinson, Executive Director of the NC Cattlemen’s Association, will be the guest speaker at lunch giving an update on current issues and trends affecting the cattle industry.   A sponsored ribeye steak lunch along with door prizes will conclude the tour along with a mini-trade show.

Deadline to register for the tour is Monday, June 8th.
