African Swine Fever Dominates Discussion At Manitoba Pork AGM

African swine fever (ASF) was the major focus at Manitoba Pork's AGM held last week in Winnipeg.

Manitoba Agriculture Minister Ralph Eichler spoke to producers at the meeting.

"We're ramping up our consultation process and the United States is involved in these as well, because really disease has no idea where barriers are and borders mean nothing to disease so we're really focusing on ensuring that we're in zones so that if an outbreak in fact does come, we keep it contained within that zone."

Eichler says it'll be important to monitor soybean meal coming in from China, to ensure African swine fever stays out of the country.

He notes as long as ASF stays out of Canada, there should be some good financial opportunity for producers to capitalize on the hog shortage in China.
