Backyard Poultry Program To Hatch April 3 In La Vernia

By Paul Schattenberg

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will present a free “Backyard Poultry” program starting at 6:15 p.m. April 3 at the La Vernia Country Store, 13625 U.S. Highway 87 West in La Vernia.

“This course provides a broad introduction for those who want to keep small flocks of laying hens,” said Bryan Davis, AgriLife Extension agent for agriculture and natural resources for Wilson County and a program presenter. “Participants will learn about poultry feeding, health and egg production, as well as learn about the food safety side of handling eggs. They should leave the program with the knowledge required to successfully keep chickens in their own backyard.”

The program is part of AgriLife Extension’s Backyard Basics initiative, said Michelle Alewine, AgriLife Extension agent for family and consumer sciences for Wilson County and program co-presenter. For more information on Backyard Basis programs, go to http://www.backyardbasics.com

“The Backyard Basics initiative is a statewide effort by AgriLife Extension focusing on the production, preservation and preparation of wholesome, nutritious homegrown and homemade foods,” Alewine said.
