The Canadian canola crush declined modestly in May compared with the previous month but remained above year-ago levels.
A Statistics Canada crush report Tuesday showed processors crushed 1.036 million tonnes of canola in May, down 1.5% from 1.052 million in April. However, the monthly crush was 24.7% above the 831,193 tonnes processed in May 2025.
The year-to-date 2025-26 crush, covering August through May, reached 10.252 million tonnes. That was 6.9% above the 9.587 million tonnes crushed during the same 10-month period of the previous marketing year.
At the end of May, the cumulative crush represented about 85% of Agriculture Canada’s full-year forecast of a record 12.1 million tonnes. Processors would need to crush roughly 1.85 million tonnes during June and July combined to meet that projection.
The strong year-over-year pace reflects expanding domestic processing capacity and continued demand for canola oil and meal.
According to the Canola Council of Canada, domestic processing capacity is expected to reach approximately 15 million tonnes in 2026, representing an increase of about 40% from 2020.
The May crush produced 446,725 tonnes of canola oil, down 0.9% from 450,576 tonnes in April but 26.5% above the 353,218 tonnes produced in May last year.
