Corn Seeding Underway In Southern Manitoba

Corn planting has started in southern Manitoba.

Pam de Rocquigny, general manager for the Manitoba Corn Growers Association, says most of the crop that has been seeded to-date is in the central region.

She says a spring frost in the next week or two shouldn't have a major impact on the corn already in the ground.

"That's just because the growing point for corn, actually remains below the soil surface, up until about the B5 stage," explained de Rocquigny.

She recommends a seeding depth between 1.5 and 2 inches, noting anything shallower than 1.5 inches could affect root development.
