Canadian farmers ended up seeding more corn and soybeans this year than they originally intended in the spring.
Statistics Canada’s June acreage report on Tuesday estimated 2026 national corn planted area at 3.963 million acres, up approximately 117,000 acres, or 3%, from March intentions of 3.846 million. The latest estimate is also 4.8% above the 3.782 million acres planted in 2025.
National soybean area reached 5.961 million acres, about 72,000 acres, or 1.2%, above the March forecast of 5.889 million. Plantings were 3.1% higher than last year’s 5.782 million acres.
Farmers in the largest production province of Ontario reported planting 2.256 million acres of corn, down about 60,000 acres, or 2.6%, from March intentions of 2.316 million. Despite the downward revision, area remained 2.7% above the 2.198 million acres planted in 2025 and was roughly in line with the province’s five-year average.
Ontario soybean plantings were estimated at 2.872 million acres, about 22,000 acres, or 0.8%, below the March estimate of 2.894 million. Area was also down slightly from 2025, falling 0.6% from 2.888 million acres.
Manitoba posted the largest upward adjustment in corn. Farmers planted a record 692,600 acres, up approximately 106,000 acres, or 18%, from the March estimate of 586,800 acres. Corn area increased 11.8% from the previous record of 619,400 acres established in 2025.
