Reducing Red Tape for Farmers

Simplifying Farm Business Registration would Save Time and Reduce Paperwork

Ontario's Government for the People is taking action to ensure the province's agricultural sector is open for business and better able to create and protect jobs.

Ernie Hardeman, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, was at the Doan & Family Turkey Farm in Norwich, Ontario announce a proposal to reduce red tape for farmers as part of the Restoring Ontario's Competitiveness Act.

"Ontario's farmers and farm businesses are among the many impacted by burdensome, unnecessary government red tape," said Minister Hardeman. "I am pleased to be working to remove many of these barriers to business growth and job creation in the agricultural sector. In fact, we are looking to do even more as we work with the sector to find additional areas for the government to address so they can focus on growing their businesses."

"Our government is working hard to reduce the regulatory burden facing Ontario's job creators. It is not simply about reducing the number of regulations, it is about making it faster, easier and cheaper to do business in Ontario," said Todd Smith, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, and lead minister on reducing red tape and regulatory burden. "Our proposals to make it simpler to register a farm business will reduce paperwork and save farmers time and money."

If approved, the proposal would allow for the Farm Business Registration Program to be modernized, through electronic delivery and a simplified registration process, making it easier and more cost-effective. This would help farmers to save time and reduce paperwork.

The action is among more than 30 red tape and regulatory reductions recently announced by the government to reduce the burden on job creators while protecting our environment and maintaining rules that keep Ontarians safe and healthy.

The proposed changes are part of the government's multi-year Ontario Open for Business Action Plan, which is tackling the red tape that's driving jobs and investment out of the province. The plan includes a target to reduce regulatory red tape affecting businesses by 25 per cent.
