Saskatchewan Swine Producers Encouraged to Embrace Real-Time Biosecurity Tracking

A new partnership between Sask Pork and Farm Health Guardian is aiming to strengthen on-farm biosecurity across Saskatchewan’s pork industry through real-time tracking technology for people, trucks, and service vehicles entering swine operations.

The initiative gives commercial pork producers and transporters access to GPS-based movement tracking systems designed to improve traceability and response times during potential disease events. The program comes at a critical time as the swine industry continues to focus heavily on disease prevention and export market protection.

According to Alison Sullivan, Producer Services Manager with Sask Pork, biosecurity remains one of the most important priorities in modern pork production due to the constant risk posed by domestic and foreign animal diseases. With approximately 70 percent of Canadian pork production exported globally, maintaining strong health protocols is essential to preserving international market access and long-term industry sustainability.

The system works by creating virtual geofences around swine farms and other high-traffic locations such as truck washes and border crossings. Vehicles can connect through existing GPS systems or through specialized GPS-enabled trailer lights offered by Farm Health Guardian. Farm personnel and visitors can also use a mobile application to digitally check in and out of sites, while producers have the option to install digital visitor logbooks for added oversight.
