Weeds Starting To Emerge

Farmers are starting to see more weeds in the fields.

Kim Brown-Livingston is Manitoba Agriculture's Weed Specialist.

"It's still early days yet. The rain was a godsend on a number of fronts, but it has started the weeds growing. The crops are starting to really take off. We're kind of at the tail end of the burn off season. We still have some land to be seeded and some of the later seeded stuff isn't quite up yet, but with these warm temperatures and the reason rains, the crops are coming up very quickly."

She commented on the types of weeds showing up.

"Lamb's quarters and our kochia and that type of thing. Starting to see the warm season weeds poking their heads up, so we're starting to see the redroot pigweed and the foxtails are starting to come now, they're pretty little still. It's pretty hard to tell what some of the weeds are but give them a few days."

Brown-Livingston says dandelions are everywhere, however it's too late to spray for them.
