Wheat Quality More Of A Concern Than Quantity

According to Statistics Canada's November crop production estimates, total wheat production is expected to increase 15 % from last year to 31.7 million tonnes in 2016.

This marks the second time in five years that wheat production exceeded 30 million tonnes.

Market Analyst Brian Voth is the president of Prairie Farm Consulting.

He says its not so much the quantity, but the quality that will have the biggest impact.

"The biggest challenge, and this report doesn't account for it, is the quality aspect," commented Voth. "A lot of poor stuff on the durum, there's a lot of number 3, 4, and 5...There may be a lot of it, but there's a lot of marginal quality stuff. That's going to be a bit of a challenge on how the market's going to deal with that."

Manitoba farmers reported 4.2 million tonnes of wheat production in 2016, virtually unchanged from 2015 levels.
