Winter Wheat Not Quite Ready For Winter

Winter wheat acres may be hurt this year due to the delay in harvest, as the crop is normally seeded into canola stubble.

However, Doug Martin, Chair of Winter Cereals Manitoba, says he's still expecting acres to stay about the same as last year.

Martin gave an update on the crop, adding he's never seen it this wet at this time of year.

"I think it's a little bit stressed," he said. "It seems like it rains every second day. The stuff I've seen is a little on the yellow side, a little moisture stressed in spots. Hopefully that will straighten around eventually after the rest of the weather we get this week. Not much you can do about it if it's in the ground."

Martin says the fall rye is at the 2 to 3 leaf stage while winter winter is around that 2 leaf stage. He adds the heat early this week should help bring out another leaf or so.

Video: This Implement Means Trouble...

Sometimes you have to pull out the tool that nobody wants to use to save the crop. we're hooked up to the rotary hoe because the ground has crusted over hard, and our corn is struggling to emerge. It's a bumpy, dusty job, but getting that top layer broken up is the only way to give this corn a fighting chance! Once the rescue mission is complete, we're shifting gears. We hit the fields for some spraying, find some dry dirt to work and finally get the planter rolling. It’s been over 2 weeks since a seed has been put into the ground… it sure feels good to be back!!
