Winter Wheat Not Quite Ready For Winter

Winter wheat acres may be hurt this year due to the delay in harvest, as the crop is normally seeded into canola stubble.

However, Doug Martin, Chair of Winter Cereals Manitoba, says he's still expecting acres to stay about the same as last year.

Martin gave an update on the crop, adding he's never seen it this wet at this time of year.

"I think it's a little bit stressed," he said. "It seems like it rains every second day. The stuff I've seen is a little on the yellow side, a little moisture stressed in spots. Hopefully that will straighten around eventually after the rest of the weather we get this week. Not much you can do about it if it's in the ground."

Martin says the fall rye is at the 2 to 3 leaf stage while winter winter is around that 2 leaf stage. He adds the heat early this week should help bring out another leaf or so.
