Texas announces available funding for young farmers

Eligible for farmers between 18 and 45 years old

By Diego Flammini, Farms.com

Young farmers in Texas who are interested in expanding their agricultural business or begin a new agribusiness venture are eligible to apply for funding through the Young Farmer Grant Program.

Texas officials understand that their current farmers continue to age and the future of agriculture must be placed in the younger generations.

“With only six percent of our farmers and ranchers under the age of 35, now it is more important than ever that we support this critical group in our industry,” Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller said in a release. “The future of Texas agriculture lies in the hands of our next generation — today’s young farmers. I’m pleased to announce this grant opportunity and cannot wait to see the impact these bright young folks have on Texas agriculture.”

Some specifics related to the grants include:

  • They can range between $5000 and $10,000
  • Grants are offered two times per year
  • Applicants must be able to match the amount they’re awarded
  • Grants can’t be used to make capital purchases (personal property, etc.)

Any farmers between 18 and 45 years old are eligible to apply and are encouraged to do so by Tuesday, November 3rd at 5:00pm.

Meet Willy: California Farm Bureau’s 2025 Farm Dog of the Year!

We’re excited to introduce Willy, a miniature long-haired dachshund with a big heart and even bigger courage, and the Grand Prize winner of this year’s Farm Dog of the Year Contest!

Willy may be small, but he’s become an indispensable partner on owner Marshal Hagedorn’s forestry and cattle operations in Shasta, Tehama, and Siskiyou counties. Adopted in 2023, he quickly found his place on the ranch, helping manage critters, tagging along for long days in the woods, and offering unwavering companionship during demanding logging work.

Willy has even taken naturally to moving cattle, surprising calves (and more than a few full-grown cows!) with his burst of energy from the tall grass. As Marshal put it: “He goes with me everywhere every single day.”

Congratulations to Willy and his family, a perfect example of how every good farm dog, no matter the size, helps keep California agriculture running strong.
