Thomas Edison was part of a New York Graphic’s April Fool’s Day joke when the newspaper published that he had created a food machine. The machine could turn soil into cereal and water into wine, thus ending world hunger.

Multiple newspapers reprinted the article, and many people believed the story as Edison had just invented the phonograph in 1877.
