USDA grants foster native farming innovations

The Pocasset Pokanoket Land Trust (PPLT), a key player in Northeast Indigenous agriculture, utilizes USDA funding to empower and reconnect Native American communities with their agricultural heritage.

This support is part of a broader initiative to address food insecurity and promote sustainable farming practices within tribal lands.

By tapping into funds from the USDA's 2501 Program and collaborating with agencies like the National Resource Conservation Service and the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program, PPLT enhances its outreach and educational programs.

These programs are crucial for training local farmers, developing community gardens, and improving marketing strategies for Indigenous produce.

“Leveraging the 2501 Program funding, BFRDP, and NRCS grants has created a functional series of programs that we would never have had otherwise,” explained Nathan Erwin, who leads the trust's agricultural and land stewardship initiatives.

PPLT's efforts significantly contribute to the revival of Indigenous agricultural practices, strengthening food autonomy and reinforcing cultural ties within the community. The impact of these programs extends beyond immediate food access, promoting long-term sustainability and resilience among Northeast Native American tribes.

This initiative not only supports the physical health of the communities but also nourishes their cultural heritage and sense of identity.
