Experts discuss One Health approach for screwworm control

The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) regional office for the Americas will host a virtual webinar on August 19 to discuss the potential wildlife impacts of the reemergence of the new world screwworm. The event begins at 8 a.m. CDT and will be presented in both English and Spanish.

The new world screwworm, a pest dangerous to both animals and humans, has recently reappeared in several countries across the Americas. While historically managed from an animal health perspective, its link to wildlife introduces new challenges. Certain species can act as carriers or reservoirs, increasing the risk of spread to other animals and regions.

This evolving threat calls for a coordinated response that unites animal health authorities, environmental agencies, and conservation groups. Experts stress the importance of a “One Health” approach, recognizing the connection between human, animal, and environmental health to achieve effective prevention, monitoring, and control.

The webinar aims to:

  • Raise awareness about the current status of the screwworm and its impact on wildlife and biodiversity.

  • Highlight wildlife’s role in the spread of the pest.

  • Offer practical tools for wildlife agencies to detect and address cases early through cross-sector collaboration.

Participants will hear from specialists across the Americas who will share experiences, lessons learned, and effective strategies. The session will be open to all, with special relevance for veterinary staff, wildlife health agencies, NGOs, private sector stakeholders, educators, students, and researchers.

Registration is open online, providing an opportunity to gain valuable insights into protecting both livestock and wildlife from this harmful pest.
