Young farmers in Texas set to receive grants

More than $300,000 being set aside

In an effort to keep the future of Texas agriculture strong, 33 young farmers and ranchers in the Lone Star State will receive grants totalling $306,440 through the Texas Department of Agriculture's Young Farmer Grant Program.

Grants

“With only six percent of our farmers and ranchers under the age of 35, now more than ever, it is imperative that we support this critical segment of our industry,” Commissioner Miller said. “The future of Texas agriculture lies partly in the hands of our next generation who are today’s young farmers. I’m pleased to be announcing this second round of grant awards. I cannot wait to see the impact these bright young folks have on Texas agriculture.”

To be eligible for the grant program, farmers must be between the ages of 18 and 45. The funds, which range from $5,000 to $10,000, are used to help create, sustain and expand agricultural businesses in the Texas. Recipients include livestock, horticulture, apiary and cheese-making operations.

With populations expected to rise, so does the need for food. Texas officials say the grants are a good way to ensure agriculture in the state is in safe hands.

“Our young farmers are facing challenges different from the preceding generations with more and more mouths to feed,” Commissioner Miller said. “It won’t be an easy task, but I know these grant winners are up for the challenge.”

Another round of grants will be given out later in the fall.
