Canola Growers Encouraged To Start Figuring Out Seeding Rates

Now is a good time for canola growers to start making plans for seeding rates.

That from Angela Brackenreed, agronomist with the Canola Council of Canada, who says these rates should be based on individual seed lots and fields.

She notes the seed weight is given in grams per thousand seeds and can be found on every bag of certified seed.

Knowing the plant stand target and expected seed survival makes it possible to determine what the seeding rate should be.

"We recommend shooting for around six plants per square foot and have found that a 60 per cent seed survival is fairly normal, although that number can obviously go up or down depending on conditions and your particular practices," explained Brackenreed.
