Emptying A Catch Basin

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) is reminding livestock producers that fall is an excellent season to empty their catch basin.

“Maintaining an empty catch basin will help to reduce the risk of overflow next spring,” says Cody Metheral, CFO extension specialist, AF, Lethbridge. “During pump-out, it is important to remember that over application of catch basin contents could result in runoff from the field, and producers should only apply liquids as fields conditions allow.”

Metheral says there are a number of resources available to help producers with emptying a catch basin. “AF has created, and posted on-line, a catch basin maintenance and design factsheet for producers to review, plus, producers may be interested in the Growing Forward 2 funding support to construct new or improve an existing catch basin.”
