An analysis of the economic contributions of Manitoba's pork sector shows the majority of agricultural and processing jobs in Manitoba are related to pork production. An independent third-party analysis, that looked at the economic and social contributions of pork production and processing was released to the media by Manitoba Pork yesterday.
The study shows 55 percent of all agriculture and food processing jobs in Manitoba are tied to the hog sector, that the provincial hog sector contributes 22 thousand jobs across the province in both urban and rural communities, the hog sector contributes over 2.3 billion dollars to the provincial GDP annually and directly contributes 139 million dollars to the province in tax revenue and 87 million dollars in municipal tax revenue.Rick Préjet, the chair of Manitoba Pork says the analysis shows the province’s hog sector is an economic powerhouse for communities both large and small.

Préjet notes over 40 new barn sites or expansions have been approved since 2017 across the province, adding over 200 million dollars in new private investment in primary agricultural production and Manitoba’s hog sector is attracting new value-added investment, such as the recent 182 million expansion of the Maple Leaf Foods bacon facility in Winnipeg, last week’s announcement of a 52.8 million dollars expansion at Winkler Meats and 35 million dollars invested by Topigs Norsvin on a new genetics facility just outside of Plumas.
