Grande Prairie is connecting livestock producers affected by wildfires

Recent wildfires in Alberta have placed enormous stress on livestock producers, especially swine and cattle farmers. In response, the County of Grande Prairie has launched a peer-to-peer support program to help address the urgent need for livestock feed

The initiative encourages community members with spare feed to come forward and share with those impacted by the wildfires. Importantly, there is no minimum number of animals required for a producer to participate in the program.

Many operations have lost access to feed supplies and are struggling to sustain their animals. To help, the County is acting as a connector—linking those with available resources to those in need.

Producers who wish to help can email AGFieldman@countygp.ab.ca with their name, contact details, and a brief description of the type and amount of feed they can offer. The County will then pass this information along to affected farmers.

It is important to note that the County will not be involved in the actual transactions. This program is designed as a peer-to-peer effort to keep things simple and transparent.

The wildfires also highlight the importance of registering livestock and equipment in the County’s Emergency Response Plan. This ensures the County can better understand what support is needed during future emergencies. Registration details are used only in emergencies to help those directly affected.

This grassroots effort is helping Alberta’s farming community stay strong and connected in a time of need.
