Swine Vaccination Guide from Iowa Pork Industry Center

A publication titled "Swine Vaccination Considerations" from the Iowa State University Extension is available to pig owners for free. This publication provides guidelines for swine vaccinations based on disease, stage of production, and time of administration. These guidelines come at a time when rural veterinarians are difficult to find, and medications, such as many useful antibiotics, have moved to prescription only.

The guidelines are not one-size-fits-all protocols for swine vaccinations. Instead, they offer general considerations that can be adapted to specific situations. The publication emphasizes the importance of farmers working with their veterinarians, creating a a valid veterinary client-patient relationship (VCPR), and working together to create a functional protocol for their operation.

The publication is available in PDF format and can be downloaded for free from Iowa State Extension. This resource is a valuable tool for swine producers seeking to optimize their vaccination protocols and ensure the health and productivity of their herds. The realities of rural vet shortages and new livestock drug rules highlight the need for further support and resources for livestock producers, this resource is just one step in the direction of arming pig farmers with information to support their herd.
