Weekend Frost Causes Significant Canola Damage

It was more bad news for canola producers over the weekend with severe frost blanketing many parts of Manitoba.

The most recent case of frost may turn out to be the most damaging, with reports that the temperature dipped down to minus nine in some areas of the province.

Angela Brackenreed is an agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada.

She expects a lot of reseeding will need to take place, however she says there is a chance producers will be able to recover.

"It is certainly really unfortunate, but on the bright side it's still relatively early and we've seen actually in Manitoba the past few years where those later seeded crops actually seem to have as good or better yield potential as the earlier seeded crops."

We cover: we are chatting with Dan Gangon of Broadfork Farm in Virginia. I saw Dan and his partner Janet speak at the VABF conference a few years back and I just loved how down to earth they were about the ups and downs of winter farming, farming in general, and work life balance, which is a lot of what we chat about today. We are also gonna be talking about how and why they certify as Certified Naturally Grown, and how that label has worked for them.
