First Grain Elevators

Joseph Dart and Robert Dunbar invented grain elevators in Buffalo, N.Y. in 1842 after seeing the issues surrounding unloading and storing grain at the Erie Canal.

Dart recognized the effort needed to unload grain, and using inspiration from steam-powered flour mills, wanted to mechanize the process. He hired Dunbar, a mechanical engineer, to help.
