Dr. Ryan Gibson named Libro professor of regional economic development for southwestern Ontario

Gibson joins the Ontario Agricultural College

Dr. Ryan Gibson has been named the Libro professor of regional economic development for southwestern Ontario.

The professorship is a partnership between Libro Credit Union and the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC). Gibson will examine key issues related to the future prosperity of rural communities, including public policy and governance.

Specific goals include:

  • Establishing southwestern Ontario as a defined economic region of the province and identifying strategies to shape the future vision of economic development.
  • Strengthening links between rural and urban communities to establish solutions for an integrated regional economy.
  • Building a network among Ontario's post-secondary institutions and research facilities to collaborate on initiatives to grow regional economic development.

"The opportunity created through this innovation position is truly exciting," Gibson said in a release. "I am looking forward to working with communities, indigenous groups, and others interested in enhancing the prosperity of southwestern Ontario."

Originally from rural Manitoba, Gibson grew up close to rural communities and witnessed changes in agriculture and other facets of rural living, which added to his selection.

"Ryan's expertise and experience are a perfect fit for this new position," said Rene Van Acker, dean of OAC. "His focus on community-engaged scholarship combined with his enthusiasm, assures me he will do great things while working with the communities of southwestern Ontario."
