A barn fire in Oro-Medonte, Ontario was destroyed by fire on Tuesday.

The blaze began around 6:30 a.m. on Penetanguishene Road. Fire crews from Barrie, Springwater and Oro-Medonte responded to the call but were unable to save the barn.

“Our bedroom just lit up orange. I quickly looked out the window and could just see the barn was in flames, (the) biggest flames I’ve ever seen,” resident Mel Nadon told CTV News Barrie.

Instead firefighters focused on stopping the fire from spreading to a home and another barn.

Sherwood Stables rented the barn and 15 horses called it home. Due to the warm weather, the animals were outside when the fire started, or else things could have been much worse.

“Even though this is very traumatic, the fact that there are no fatalities, I’m very relieved,” Melissa Sherwood, who runs Sherwood Stables, told CTV. “In the winter time, they’re in every night. I’m just glad the winter has held off.”

The cause of the fire is still undetermined and damages are estimated at $385,000.

Farms.com has reached out to Oro-Medonte fire Chief Hugh Murray for updates and will provide them once they become available.

The fire in Oro-Medonte comes a day after a barn burned down in Monck, Ontario.

That fire resulted in the loss of about 640 acres of baled hay, the building and equipment inside.

Damages are estimated at $3 million.

Including Tuesday’s Oro-Medonte fire, Farms.com has covered nearly 21 fires at farms and barns across the province in 2016.

This video is an essential watch for pork producers who are looking to safeguard their operations against the threats of diseases like foot and mouth disease, classical swine fever, and African swine fever. Why Should Pork Producers Care? An outbreak of foreign animal diseases in the U.S. could lead to severe restrictions and potentially result in industry-wide financial losses estimated between $15 to $100 billion. The SPS Plan is a collective effort to prevent such catastrophic outcomes by enhancing biosecurity, ensuring animal traceability, and promoting effective disease monitoring.
