Alberta Pulse Growers Pleased To Support Grain Safety Program

The Alberta Pulse Growers (APG) is pleased to provide farm safety awareness by investing $30,000 in a multi-year commitment to the Grain Safety Program operated by the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA).

The Grain Safety Program includes the building of a mobile demonstration unit that can function as an awareness and training tool to help prevent incidents of people being trapped in grain, which CASA notes is on the rise across Canada.

“APG’s support of the Grain Safety Program is about reducing injuries and deaths on Alberta farms,” said APG Chair Allison Ammeter, who farms near Sylvan Lake. “Our directors felt that it is important for all producers, their families and their employees to take steps to prevent injuries on their farms, and we want to help them get the best information to stay safe around grain.”

The primary purpose of the program is to save lives, said CASA Executive Director Marcel Hacault.

“The mobile unit will be used to raise awareness about the hazards of moving grain,” he said. “It will also be available for training first responders in rescue techniques and by larger farms to develop customized emergency procedures.”

Video: Spring weed control in winter wheat with Broadway® Star (pyroxsulam + florasulam)

#CortevaTalks brings you a short update with Cereal Herbicides Category Manager, Alister McRobbie, on how to get the most out of Broadway® Star.

Significant populations of grassweeds, including ryegrass and brome, can threaten winter wheat yields. Spring applications of a contact graminicide, such as Broadway Star from Corteva Agriscience, can clear problem weeds, allowing crops to grow away in the spring.

Broadway Star (pyroxsulam + florasulam) controls ryegrass, sterile brome, wild oats and a range of broad-leaved weeds such as cleavers. It can be applied to winter wheat up until GS32, but the earlier the application is made, the smaller the weed, and the greater the benefit to the crop. Weeds should be actively growing. A good rule of thumb is that if your grass needs cutting, conditions are right to apply Broadway Star.
