Program seeks experienced farmers to guide the next generation
Midwestern farmers with at least five years of experience are being encouraged to help guide the next generation of growers. Harvesting Our Potential is the oldest running mentorship program of the Women Food and Agriculture Network. For more than fifteen years, the program has supported beginning farmers and has seen the need for mentorship grow. Many participants who first joined as mentees have later returned as mentors, showing how mentorship creates lasting support, strong confidence and durable friendships.
The program began in Iowa and has now expanded into several midwestern states, including Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Illinois, Ohio and Missouri. The goal is to continue growing into more states so that beginning farmers across the region can access experienced support close to home. The current mentor application is open for farmers who enjoy sharing knowledge and want to contribute to the success of sustainable agriculture.
Mentorships are designed to meet the needs of each pair and may take place in person or virtually. This flexibility allows mentors and mentees to choose the best way to communicate and learn. Mentorships are currently limited to the Midwest because the program is supported by a small regional team and does not yet have the capacity to expand nationwide. The hope is to grow beyond the region in the future when resources allow.
Eligible mentors must live in the Midwest, be at least eighteen years old and have a minimum of five years of farming experience. Mentorships last between eight and twelve weeks, depending on the goals of the mentee and mentor. For 2026, mentorships must begin by July sixth and conclude by September thirtieth. Mentors receive a five hundred dollar stipend for completing their mentorship, access to virtual networking sessions and long term connections with their mentees and fellow mentors.
Farmers who are interested in becoming mentors can apply through the program’s online application. Questions about the process or requirements can be directed to the program manager for additional support. This opportunity allows experienced farmers to strengthen the agricultural community and help new farmers succeed with confidence and guidance.
