Canadian Foodgrain Bank Donations Increase

Saskatchewan residents are known as being extremely generous when it comes to helping people in need.

Rick Block is the Provincial Co-ordinator for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

He says for fiscal 2017-2018 Saskatchewan donations were up significantly.

“We had donations of 2.5 million with about 1.1 million coming from the growing projects and farm auctions.”

Block notes people generously donated with the appeal for assistance for the Rohingya crisis, where nearly 700,000 people fled the destruction of their homes and persecution in Myanmar since August of 2017.

The Canadian Foodgrains Banks is a Christian Response to hunger.

Block says the money and grain donations they raise go to areas like Yemen where they finally have a secured port to get food aid through.

“There are between 8 and 12 million people there that are getting closer and closer to the brink of starvation.  That is essentially a completely man-made situation because of the conflict there.  With the port being secured, or somewhat secured, it means emergency food aid is able to flow to the civilian population there.”

The Canadian Foodgrains Bank accepts grain, and cash donations which are then matched 4 to 1 by the Federal Government to assist with food, nutritional programs and agricultural assistance in third-world countries.
