In August, Harvest for Kids 2018, will try to set a new Guinness record for the world’s largest harvest.

In total, 300 combine drivers will participate and the organization expects over 25,000 spectators to be present for the world record attempt, a recent Children’s Camps International (CCI) release said. Harvest for Kids is an initiative through CCI.

A Harvest for Kids project set the previous record six years ago in Dalmeny, Sask. with 244 combines that harvested consecutively for five minutes.

The next bin-busting harvest will take place on Sat. Aug. 4 in Winkler, Man., the release said.

To kick off the festivities, families can enjoy a free concert featuring High Valley, the Hunter Brothers, and Rosemary & the Sweet Sound Revival at Parkland Stage Friday night.

On the day of the event, Harvest for Kids will host a farm show, family activities and a barbecue lunch, the release said. All proceeds will go towards the work of CCI and The Bunker youth drop in centre.

In addition to hopefully setting a new harvest record, CCI looks to raise enough money to send one million kids to camp.

“This harvest is a massive opportunity for us to show the global audience the generosity of the broader Canadian community,” Dave Thiessen, the national director of CCI Harvest for Kids, said in the release.

“It’s bigger than all of us.”

CCI is recruiting volunteers to help with such event logistics as directing traffic, security, registration and set up.

Harvest for Kids is an opportunity for the agricultural community to give back to others around the world. This event raises awareness for CCI, an organization that works with developing nations to enhance the lives of children through camp programs. To date, CCI has reached 1.8 million children and their families.

Video: Canada reaches tariff deal with China on canola, electric vehicles

Canada has reached a deal with China to increase the limit of imports of Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) in exchange for Beijing dropping tariffs on agricultural products, such as canola, Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Friday.

The tariffs on canola are dropping to 15 per cent starting on March 1. In exchange for dropping duties on agricultural products, Carney is allowing 49,000 Chinese EVs to be exported to Canada.

Carney described it as a “preliminary but landmark” agreement to remove trade barriers and reduce tariffs, part of a broader strategic partnership with China.
