Ontario Pork’s Friends of the Food Bank program and the Ontario Association of Food Banks (OAFB) have just donated one million servings of Ontario pork to families living with hunger.

“We are incredibly grateful for the longstanding commitment of Ontario’s hog industry,” said Carolyn Stewart, OAFB’s executive director, in a Sept. 28 release.

“Through the generosity of Ontario Pork, industry, farmers, and processors, families in need are provided with greater access to fresh, healthy protein that might not otherwise be available.

“This makes a direct and positive impact in their overall health and well-being, and in the health and well-being of their communities.”

The Ontario hog industry has a history of supporting the OAFB and various communities. Ontario Pork’s Friends of the Food Bank program has contributed over $150,000 through this initiative, the release stated.

With the help of matching funds provided by Food Banks Canada and The French’s Food Company to purchase Ontario pork, the OAFB and Ontario Pork have distributed fresh pork to 128 food banks this year.

“Ontario’s pork farmers are committed to building strong, healthy communities,” said Eric Schwindt, Ontario Pork board chair, in the release.

“Fresh pork is an important source of healthy protein and Ontario pork farmers are proud to work with the Friends of the Food Bank program to support our neighbours and fellow Ontarians when they need a hand up.”
