By Amanda Brodhagen, Farms.com

When the University of Guelph touts that it’s a world class institution - it’s certainly not a joke, especially as it pertains to its agricultural program offerings at the Ontario Agricultural College. This year, Guelph made the list of the world’s top universities for agriculture, according to an international education network.

The University of Guelph ranked 24th on the list, with two other Canadian universities making the cut - McGill University at 32nd place and the University of British Columbia (UBC) shortly behind at 37th.

Guelph did better than in previous years, moving up eight spots from 2013. The same goes for McGill, gaining traction by moving up 14 spots, while UBC dropped in its standing by 10 spots. Though, on the QS scale, Guelph had more points than McGill and UBG for academic reputation, the other two had higher points for overall research impact.

Besides the Canadian universities, nine of the top 10 were American schools, with the University of California, Davis, taking the top spot, Cornell University in third, University of Wisconsin – Madison in fourth, and Iowa State University in fifth.

A school in the Netherlands was the only non-American school that made the top five – Wageningen University, which placed second. In the 2014 report, a total of 23 out of the 50 schools included on the list are American institutions.

Guelph has made other such prestigious lists in the past. It consistently gets featured in Maclean’s magazine as one of the best comprehensive universities in Canada, and additionally top of its class for student excellence, reputation and quality of facility.
