Harvesting Tips For Canola

Harvest activities continue to gear up around the province.

So far, 9 % of the Provincial crop has been combined and another 10 % is swathed or ready to straight-cut.

Kaeley Kindrachuk is a Regional Crops Specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture office at Outlook.

She says for canola you want to see 60% seed color change prior to swathing.

Check the main stem from the bottom up and the seeds at the bottom of the main stem should be turned.

The seeds at the top of the plant will still be green, but they should be firm and you’ll be able to roll them in your fingers without crushing them.
If you’re looking at straight cutting Canola watch fields that have insect, disease or hail damage as they may ripen prematurely and shatter.
