Rural municipalities prepare for rising flood risks and emergencies

The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) is urging residents to focus on flood safety as widespread flooding continues to affect many parts of the province. Several rural and local communities are facing serious challenges as water levels rise, and access routes are damaged.

At present, 15 local states of emergency remain active across Saskatchewan. In some river systems, floodwaters are expected to peak within the next four to six days. Many communities have already been isolated due to washed-out roads, making travel difficult and increasing safety risks for residents.

"Saskatchewan's rural municipalities are on the front lines of this flooding emergency," said Bill Huber, SARM President. "Clear, timely communication with residents can save lives and property. We're urging all RMs to use every available channel to share safety information and connect residents with provincial support programs."

SARM has highlighted that rural municipalities are among the most affected during flooding events. Clear and timely communication is seen as essential to protect lives and property. Local governments are being encouraged to share safety updates widely and guide residents toward available provincial assistance programs.

To support flood response and recovery, the province has made two key programs available. The Emergency Flood Damage Reduction Program provides funding for urgent flood protection efforts.

This support is available for communities, rural municipalities, businesses, non-profit groups, and individuals with rural homes, cottages, or water wells at risk. In addition, the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program helps cover eligible disaster-related costs.

Municipalities needing help with emergency services can contact the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) at 1.800.667.9660, which continues to respond to requests and stay in close contact with affected areas.

SARM has also shared important safety advice for residents. Before flooding occurs, people are encouraged to check flood risks using official maps, prepare emergency kits, plan communication with family members, and identify safe evacuation routes. Downloading emergency alert services can also help residents receive timely updates.

During active flooding, residents are strongly advised never to walk or drive through floodwaters. Water conditions can change quickly and may include strong currents or hidden hazards. People should avoid unnecessary phone use unless there is a life-threatening emergency and wait for official approval before returning home.
