New Hybrid Sunflower Could Lead To A Resurgence In Saskatchewan

New Hybrid Sunflower Could Lead To A Resurgence In Saskatchewan

A brand new public sunflower variety called honeycomb, may be a good oilseed crop to add to your rotation.

Sherri Roberts a Regional Crop Specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture says the new sunflower is a hybrid variety that could create a resurgence in Saskatchewan thanks to its tolerance of the provinces climate.

“I think it’s going to create sunflower resurgence here in the province,” Roberts told.

“It now fits much better into the harvesting and planting conditions that we have in Saskatchewan, we’ve been also doing some work on the salinity issues in sunflowers, and honeycomb is also one that fits into that little niche problem that farmers are having,” she said.

Roberts said there was an initial drop off in sunflowers due to the lack of a variety that could get harvested in time with Saskatchewan’s weather conditions.
