Wheatland County Food Bank Gets Huge Donation From Schools

The schools in Strathmore really brought their "A" game when it came to collecting donations for the Wheatland County Food Bank. About 3000lbs of food was collected for the food bank with over 1300lbs of food donated by Wheatland Elementary, about 300lbs from Sacred Heart Academy's Halloween Dance and almost 800lbs collected by the Strathmore High School's Me to We club.

Wheatland Elementary specifically partners up with Strathmore Ford and the WE Scare Hunger program which is a venture of WE Schools to help with the collection of their donation items. As a way to give back to Wheatland Elementary, Strathmore Ford donated one thousand dollars to the schools hot lunch program which will go directly towards providing children at the school with much needed lunches.

Lynette Aschenbrenner, the Executive Director for the Wheatland County Food Bank said that the donations the schools collected this year add up to about 15 food hampers.

When asked about the importance of donating to the food bank Aschenbrenner said, "not just this time of year but all year round we are very busy. We pack approximately 800 hampers a year, so not only just at Christmas but throughout the entire year any donation helps."

Aschenbrenner said, "right now we are short of personal care items such as deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and then just your typical basics. We always take in canned vegetables, canned fruits, peanut butter, just the basic non-perishable items."

Breaks are hard to come by in harvest. That’s why we took the MtoM podcasting equipment to the field to visit on the issues of the day with April Hemmes of Hampton, Iowa. She filled us in on her thoughts on trade negotiations, inputs costs and machinery prices. Then she turned the tables and put Paul behind the steering wheel and started asking her own questions.
