Billions invested - Protecting public lands, boosting jobs

$2.8 Billion for public lands and recreation

By Farms.com

The US is investing heavily in public lands with a $2.8 billion allocation from the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) for fiscal year 2025. The Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Interior (DOI) will use the funding to address maintenance needs and improve outdoor recreation facilities.

GAOA provides critical funding for national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and Bureau of Indian Education schools. The 2025 budget also includes $900 million for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) to support land acquisition and outdoor recreation programs.

These investments are expected to create over 20,000 jobs and contribute more than $2.5 billion to the economy. They align with President's America the Beautiful initiative to conserve a significant portion of US lands and waters by 2030.

"The Great American Outdoors Act is making a real difference," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. "These investments improve access to public lands and our commitment to conservation."

"This funding is vital for ensuring equitable access to outdoor recreation and preserving our natural heritage," said Interior Secretary Deb Haaland. "We are committed to making sure all communities benefit from our public lands."

The DOI will invest in all 50 states for the first time, funding 83 projects to improve recreation facilities, water infrastructure, and historic structures. The USDA has proposed 89 bundled projects across the country.

LWCF funding will be used for federal land acquisition, state and local grants, and a new Tribal LWCF program. The USDA Forest Service will also receive funding for Forest Legacy and Land Acquisition programs.

This historic investment is a major step forward in improving public lands, boosting conservation efforts, and ensuring all Americans have access to the outdoors.
