CFA boss notes opportunity for northern producers

By: Kate Ayers

As climate change continues to threaten our planet, Ron Bonnett has pointed out a unique result of global warming.

Perhaps Canadian farmers will be the ones to offset crop losses suffered in other parts of the world.

“Canada is one of the few countries where climate change may create some opportunities for growing crops in northern latitudes,” said the Canadian Federation of Agriculture president, according to a Monday article on globalnews.ca.

The report quoted Bonnett indicating “we are seen as one of the few countries that can provide food for a growing global population.”

Speaking from his cow-calf operation in Bruce Mines, Ont., Bonnett noted “there is a lot more interest in taking a look at underdeveloped land in northern Ontario and Quebec because of changes in climate.”

The article indicated that world agricultural production will need to rise some 50 per cent by 2050 to keep pace with population grown, citing the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture organization (FAO).

There are always many balls in motion when it comes to an economy and way of life. Economist Gbenga Ajilore is back with us from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. He talks about the mounting healthcare crisis in rural communities in the distance to drive for service and the increase in cost for that very care. We also get into the energy sector and what the cancellation of $300 billion in clean energy investments has done to rural communities. We’ll close with changes and lost efficiencies in food assistance benefits.
